From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Response to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.
Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others lamented how extensive censorship portray former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the censorship procedure.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and image appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely redacted, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But a few do not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is quite rich how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those documents for months only to dump them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall discourse on the political right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for transparency that came before the legislative vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were given physical binders of materials that included little new data.
