Now is right to alter Man Utd's tactical setup - the manager states.

Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes was one of seven first-team stars absent from the Boxing Day win against Newcastle.

Head coach Ruben Amorim argues that switching Man Utd's tactical system due to external pressure would have signaled "the finish" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle, Amorim abandoned his usual back three setup with wing-backs and instead use an orthodox back four shielded by two central midfielders.

Amorim acknowledged this ultimately transformed into a back six in the closing minutes as his squad clung on for a crucial result - securing only their second-ever shutout of the season.

Although he once memorably stated that even the highest authority could compel him to change his system, Amorim asserts the capacity to utilize alternative formations has always been part of his plan.

Nevertheless, he emphasizes he could only alter the tactics when his team were faring sufficiently well - lest it would appear as if he was succumbing to outside pressure.

"When I came here the previous campaign, I recognized maybe I don't have the squad to excel in a back three, but it was the commencement of a process," he commented.

"The goal was to establish an style. Currently is a separate juncture. We don't have a lot of players, and we need adjust, so they understand why we are switching things up.

"It is not because of the pressure of you guys, or the faithful.

"When you discuss changing the system all the time, I can't make a change because the squad will understand I'm changing because of you and I feel that is the end for the coach.

"Only when we are playing well in our system, that becomes the opportunity to change.

"We are going to grow into a stronger team because when all the players return, we are not planning to employ three defenders all the time."

Availability Challenges Loom Large

With only two victories in their last eight outings before defeating Newcastle, it is arguable whether Amorim is correct to state his team have been in good form.

He is, nonetheless, operating with a severely stretched roster, with multiple senior stars already confirmed absent for the forthcoming fixture against winless Wolves.

That total will rise if playmaker Mason Mount is unable to recover the knock that forced his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is a key name who will be absent for the Wolves match, even though he is understood to be pressing his manager to allow him to make a comeback following his hamstring injury.

"Bruno is already saying he needs to train," said Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to play against Wolves. No way. You can quote me on that."

The Captain's Influence Is Unwavering

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old will likely continue to be a prominent presence, as while most unavailable stars watch matches from the stands, Fernandes was observed monitoring the warm-ups from the mouth of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim expects his captain to continue providing insight.

"He is a leader," he affirmed. "He cannot be the type of player that when he is not playing, he's not talking and offering advice. He's always speaking. That's why he's the skipper.

"There are flaws at times - his mannerisms he moves his arms - but he has a lot of strengths. Even after he finishes treatment, he goes to watch the rest of the squad practicing. There are a many aspects that go unnoticed.

"I don't know if he desires my job or not, but he's a born leader. The guy is a leader."

Return Schedule for Injured Personnel

Although the exact timeline for Fernandes' comeback - and that of other injured stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is unclear, before the conclusion of January, the club will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental duty.
